The Inspired Teacher Podcast
For this assignment, I listened to an episode of The Inspired Teacher Podcast hosted by Mike Brilla titled “An EdTech Integration Mindset.” This episode focused on how teachers should approach educational technology, not necessarily in the form of a tool but through a mindset that focuses on function and student learning. The episode dove into details about AI and how that is affecting classrooms and the episode more broadly explored how educators can think critically about when and why to use technology in the classroom. The most essential piece of knowledge I learned from this episode was the importance of having a mindset first approach to all kinds of new classroom applications. They explained that technology shouldn’t just be used because it is available or trendy, but because it improves learning in a meaningful way. One key takeaway was the idea that teachers should always start with the learning objective and then determine whether technology can support or improve that objective. Also, something that kept getting brought up during the podcast was the idea that there are certain things that can’t be stopped. For example, AI is going to get integrated into classrooms and there is nothing educators can do about it. So, since we can’t control AI spreading like crazy, we might as well run with it and learn as much as we can about it, so that when it finally shows up, we will be ready to use it the correct way and to its fullest potential. I also learned that flexibility is an important part of the mindset. Similarly, with how we should handle the AI situation, Teachers need to be willing to try new tools, and reflect on their effectiveness, and adjust their approach as needed. This episode changed my understanding of educational technology by shifting my focus from tools to intentionality. Before listening, I often thought about edtech in terms of what platforms or apps I could use in the classroom or AI. However, this episode made me realize that simply using technology does not guarantee better learning outcomes. This perspective made technology applied in the classroom feel less intense and more manageable because it is not about mastering every tool, but about making thoughtful instructional choices.
I would recommend this episode to every teacher; I think no matter what, they would get something out of it. Especially those who feel overwhelmed by the pressure to incorporate technology into their classrooms and those who feel like the kids these days are overwhelming. Additionally, teachers who may feel hesitant about adding in new technologies could benefit from this episode because it emphasizes that they do not need to completely change their teaching style, but instead they can gradually integrate technology in ways that align with their standard practices.
Overall, this episode was insightful because it emphasized that educational technology is not about the tools themselves, but about how they are used to support learning. It reinforced the idea that a strong instructional mindset is the foundation of effective teaching.
