Reflection on the Lesson Planning Process

Developing this technology-enhanced lesson plan helped me better understand how thoughtful  technology integration can support student learning and engagement. While creating the lesson I mainly focused on,  designing activities that were interactive, centered around the student, and aligned with both academic standards and ISTE technology standards. I wanted students to not only learn about Oregon ecosystems, but also develop skills like research, collaboration, and communication skills digitally. Overall, this process showed me how technology can improve engagement, creativity, and communication while supporting a deeper understanding of difficult content.

Technology-Enhanced Lesson Plan

Central Focus & Grade Level

Grade Level: 4th Grade

Central Focus: Students will be learning about Oregon ecosystems and use digital tools to research information and create a multimedia presentation demonstrating their understanding.

ISTE Student Standards

1.3 Knowledge Constructor
Students critically curate information from digital resources using a variety of tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that demonstrate meaningful connections.

1.6 Creative Communicator
Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively using digital tools to create original works.

Student Learning Objectives

  1. Students will identify and describe at least three characteristics of an Oregon ecosystem.
  2. Students will create a digital presentation that accurately explains their ecosystem using text, images, and recorded narration.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

This lesson provides multiple means of engagement by allowing students to choose an ecosystem that interests them. Multiple means of representation are included through videos, images, teacher instruction, and online resources. Students demonstrate learning through a multimedia presentation that includes text, visuals, and audio narration. Supports such as graphic organizers, guided notes, and flexible grouping help ensure all learners can access the content. Students may work independently or with a partner based on their learning needs.

Procedures (5E Model)

Engage (10 minutes)

  1. Display photographs of different Oregon ecosystems (forest, desert, coast, wetlands).
  2. Ask students to discuss the differences between each ecosystem.
  3. Show a short video introducing ecosystems.
  4. Facilitate a class discussion about how plants and animals survive in different habitats.

Technology Use:

  • Projector
  • Educational video

Explore (20 minutes)

  1. Divide students into small groups.
  2. Assign or allow students to select an Oregon ecosystem.
  3. Students use approved websites to research:
    • Climate
    • Plants
    • Animals
    • Geographic location
  4. Students record findings on a digital graphic organizer.

Technology Use:

  • Chromebooks
  • Online research resources

Explain (15 minutes)

  1. Bring students together for discussion.
  2. Each group shares one interesting fact they discovered.
  3. Teacher explains ecosystem vocabulary:
    • Habitat
    • Organism
    • Environment
    • Adaptation
  4. Clarify misconceptions and answer questions.

Technology Use:

  • Interactive slideshow

Elaborate (30 minutes)

  1. Students create a Google Slides presentation about their ecosystem.
  2. Presentation requirements:
    • Title slide
    • Location slide
    • Plant life slide
    • Animal life slide
    • Fun facts slide
  3. Students add:
    • Images
    • Text explanations
    • Recorded narration describing their findings
  4. Teacher circulates and provides support.

Technology Use:

  • Google Slides
  • Microphones/headsets
  • Internet research tools

Evaluate (15 minutes)

  1. Students present their digital projects to classmates.
  2. Teacher evaluates using a rubric measuring:
    • Accuracy of information
    • Completion of required elements
    • Effective use of technology
    • Presentation skills
  3. Students complete a brief reflection:
    • What did you learn?
    • What technology tool helped you learn best?
    • What would you improve next time?

Technology Use:

  • Google Slides presentations
  • Digital reflection form

Assessment

Formative Assessment

  • Observation during research
  • Class discussions
  • Graphic organizer completion

Summative Assessment

  • Multimedia ecosystem presentation
  • Student reflection

Technology Integration

Students use technology to:

  • Consume information through videos, websites, and digital resources.
  • Create knowledge by designing and presenting a multimedia Google Slides project with narration.

This lesson aligns with ISTE standards by requiring students to research, evaluate information, create original digital content, and communicate their learning using technology.
